No. 11 Clayton State women end skid with 5-4 victory over visiting Lander

MORROW, Ga. – April 1, 2012 – Having dropped four of its last five matches, the Clayton State Laker women's tennis team was looking for any possible way to get back on the winning track on Sunday against visiting Lander.

In turn, the Lakers persevered and rallied for a thrilling 5-4 victory over Lander in Peach Belt Conference action at Laker Courts. The victory improves Clayton State, ranked 11th in Division II, to 6-9 overall and 5-3 in the Peach Belt. Lander falls to 9-9 overall and 4-6 in the Peach Belt.

The Lakers dropped two of the three matches in doubles. However, Clayton State rebounded with four victories in the six singles matches to prevail.

Marie Cercelletti won a 6-0, 6-3 decision at No. 1 over Lander's Aurelia Ruffat, and Martina Dedaj won a No. 2 when the Lady Bearcats' Brandi Cordell had to retire in the second set. Charlotte Fabricius kept the momentum going at No. 3 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Lander's Eliza Adusumilli, and Alyze' Pagal prevailed over the Lady Bearcats' Raissa Adusumilli 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5.

Clayton State's lone victory in doubles was an 8-2 decision at No. 2 by Cercelletti and Fabricius against Lander's Adusumilli sisters.

Clayton State travels to Savannah on Friday for a showdown against undefeated and No. 4-ranked Armstrong.
