MORROW, Ga. – March 4, 2012 – The invitations are out, the brackets are set and the Clayton State Laker women's basketball team has punched its ticket to another NCAA Division II National Tournament.
The pairings were released officially late Sunday night by the NCAA Division II selection committee, and Clayton State earned an at-large bid to the 2012 NCAA Division II National Tournament. This marks the eighth straight season that head coach Dennis Cox's Lakers have earned a berth to the national tournament.
That includes three berths in the NCAA Division II "Elite Eight," winning the NCAA Division II National Championship last season.
The Lakers (28-3) will be one of eight teams in the Southeast Regional, which will be hosted by USC Aiken. Clayton State will be the No. 2 seed in the regional and will face No. 7 seeded Tusculum (17-10) in the opening round. The other opening round pairings feature top-seeded USC Aiken (26-3) playing No. 8 seeded Catawba (18-9), No. 3-seeded Wingate (21-7) facing No. 6-seeded Barton (21-8) and No. 4-seeded Lander (21-7) squaring off against No. 5-seeded Limestone (26-5).
The regional will take place Friday, March 9 through Monday, March 12. It will feature four quarterfinal games on Friday and two semifinal games on Saturday. The championship game and the right to advance to the NCAA Division II "Elite Eight" in San Antonio will be on Monday.
Game times and further information will be announced in the coming days.
This will mark the third time at Clayton State has squared off against Tusculum in the NCAA Division II National Tournament. The Lakers downed the Lady Pioneers 79-68 in the Southeast Regional semifinals at Lenoir-Rhyne in 2009. Tusculum returned the favor in 2010 with a 69-63 triumph in the opening round of the Southeast Regional at Lander.
In addition, Tusculum also defeated Clayton State during the regular season, 63-51 in the X-Trem Thanksgiving Classic at North Georgia on Nov. 25.
