Clayton State men return to indoor action in Gator Invite

MORROW, Ga. – January 21, 2012 – The Clayton State Laker men's track and field team will return to action in its indoor season this weekend as the Lakers will compete in the Gator Invite at Florida on Sunday.

Action begins at 11 a.m. at the Stephen O'Connell Center with field events, and running events begin at 1 p.m.

"I believe our men have returned in better condition than they did for indoor track last year," said Clayton State head coach Mike Mead. "The competition is going to be great and I look to see how our group responds.  Several of our distance guys will be trying to position themselves for a spot on our distance medley relay team that will run next month in Ohio."

Mead will look from some veterans for key leadership and strong times on Sunday.

Senior Albert Mong'ony will aim for a big result in the mile run, while Mead believes junior Ayrton Azcue could challenge the team record in the 3,000-meter run. That mark was set last season by former distance standout Fidelis Mutiso.

In the middle-distance events, junior Edlin Veras should shine in the 400-meter dash, as well as juniors Shelby Russell and Ricky Fort in the 800-meter run. In addition, sophomore Charles Anderson will aim for some strong times in both the 800-meter and mile run.
