Lakers Picked 4th in Men’s PBC Soccer Preseason Poll

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Peach Belt Conference released its preseason coaches' poll for men's soccer and Clayton State was selected fourth in the poll.  Young Harris was selected as the preseason favorites.

The Mountain Lions received eight of a possible nine first-place votes to finish with 78 total points, edging out second-place Lander by seven votes.  Flagler was third in the voting while the Lakers were fourth and Francis Marion fifth.

Clayton State finished in a tie for fourth with Francis Marion in the PBC standings last season.  At 10-5-2 overall and 5-3-1 in league play, the Lakers reached the PBC Tournament but fell in the quarterfinal round.   For 2014, the team will have to integrate 16 newcomers with a handful of returning veterans including fifth-year senior Arturo Cruz.  Also back is senior goalkeeper Nick Punter and junior midfielder Jonny Evans.  Cruz and Evans were both named to the preseason All-Conference team last week.

The men's soccer coaches' poll is listed below.  Teams were given nine points for a first-place vote, eight for a second and so on.  Coaches were not permitted to rank their own teams.

The 2014 season begins on Sept. 5 for the Lakers against King College as part of Clayton State's annual Loch Shop Shootout.
