NSCAA Division II Top 25 Poll (Oct. 4)
MORROW, Ga. – October 4, 2011 – After advancing two spots last week, the Clayton State Laker men's soccer team held steady in this week's NSCAA Division II Top 25 poll, which was released on Tuesday.
The Lakers remained 13th in the nation for a second straight week, and they were the only team to hold serve at the same position from last week. However, this marks the 17th straight week that Clayton State has been nationally-ranked in men's soccer. Head coach Pete Petersen's Lakers are currently 7-2 overall and 2-1 in the Peach Belt Conference heading into Wednesday night's PBC showdown at Montevallo.
Clayton State is one of two teams ranked nationally this week from the Peach Belt Conference. Lander, which dropped out of the Top 25 last week, re-entered the poll this week and is ranked 11th. Meanwhile, Flagler dropped out after consecutive defeats against Rollins and Lander.
For the third straight week, there is a new No. 1 team in the nation as undefeated Fort Lewis assumes the top spot. Previous No. 1-ranked Rollins suffered its first defeat of the season on Saturday against Florida Tech. Franklin Pierce is ranked second, followed by Simon Fraser at third.
Wednesday's Clayton State/Montevallo clash is set for 8:30 p.m. EDT.
MENA SELECTED PEACH BELT CONFERENCE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: The Peach Belt Conference released its weekly honors for men's soccer on Tuesday, and Clayton State forward Kenny Mena was selected as the PBC Offensive Player of the Week.
Mena, a junior from Brooklyn, N.Y., recorded an assist and scored a goal last week in the Lakers' 4-0 shutout victory over North Georgia. Mena leads Clayton State in scoring with six goals and three assists for 15 points. He is now tied for third in the Peach Belt in both goals scored and points scored.
