200! Milestone victory for No. 13 Clayton State men in 4-0 shutout over North Georgia
MORROW, Ga. – September 28, 2011 – On a night when an historic victory was recorded, the Clayton State Laker men's soccer team took care of business early and propelled itself back in the race for the Peach Belt Conference championship.
Spearheaded by three first-half goals, Clayton State recorded its second straight shutout with a 4-0 victory in Peach Belt action over visiting North Georgia at Laker Field. Clayton State, ranked 13th in the nation in Division II, improves to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in the Peach Belt. Meanwhile, North Georgia is now 4-4-1 overall and 2-2 in the Peach Belt.
The victory was a milestone for the Lakers in that it was the 200th victory in the history of men's soccer at Clayton State, which is now in its 20th season. Clayton State is now 16-0-1 lifetime against North Georgia.
The Lakers wasted little time taking control. Just two minutes into the contest, junior forward Kenny Mena fed senior forward Matty Phillips down the middle and Phillips hammered home his third goal of the season from the top of the penalty box.
Clayton State scored its next two goals within a minute apart. Jonathan Ray scored his third goal of the season in the 25th minute on a header off an assist by Phillips, followed by a penalty kick goal by Janny Rivera a minute later.
The Lakers finished off their scoring in the 48th minute when Ryan Pugh found Mena with a right cross at the top of the penalty box. Mena slammed home his sixth goal of the season.
Clayton State out-shot North Georgia 15-9, holding the Saints without a shot in the first half. The goalkeeper combination of Brian Garcia and Jon Skinner recorded the shutout with four saves. North Georgia goalkeeper Rade Tanaskovic recorded five saves.
Clayton State is off this weekend. The Lakers return to action next Wednesday (Oct. 5) at Montevallo. Game time is 8:30 p.m. EDT.
