Florence Earns First Career USTFCCCA All-Region Outdoor Honor in 400-meters

NEW ORLEANS, La. – For the first time in his career, Clayton State sophomore Chris Florence (Newnan, Ga.) has earned United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Southeast Region honors for outdoor track & field as announced by that organization on Monday, May 14.

Florence collected those honors for his season long performance in the 400-meters, an event in which he earned a pair of NCAA Provisionals. He also earned the 2018 Peach Belt Conference Championship in that event, recording a time of 48.11 in the finals.

He recorded his first provisional of the year with a time of 47.77 in the preliminaries of the PBC Championships (4/19) before bettering it in his very next meet. That would see Florence produce a time of 47.44 at the Tennessee Challenge (5/5).

The latter mark has him ranked No. 25 in the nation in the 400-meters and still with an outside chance of a berth in the 2018 NCAA Division II Championships later this month.

Additionally, Florence was a member of the PBC Champion 4x400-meter relay, earning PBC First-Team honors in both that event as well as the 400-meters.

In order to earn All-Region recognition, an individual has to either finish in the top five in their region in individual events or be a member of a relay team ranked in the region's top three.

"This is a nice honor to conclude a productive season," said head men's track & field coach Mike Mead. "Chris put the work in and it paid off in a PBC title and All-Region recognition."
