PEMBROKE, N.C. – Clayton State women's track & field finished with a flourish with an individual championship and record setting performances in the same event as they closed out the 2018 Peach Belt Conference Championships on Saturday, April 21. They finished in seventh place as a team.
Â
Sophomore
Jasmine Radford (Lawrenceville, Ga.) put forth a tremendous effort as she not only took home the 200-meter championship but did so with a record shattering time of 24.82. Additionally, fellow sophomore
Nia Elmore (Hinesville, Ga.) also surpassed the old program record with a third place finish and time of 25.12.
Â
Both earned All-Conference honors, First-Team for Radford and Third-Team for Elmore, and bested the old record of 25.23 set by Jon Taylor in 2008.
Radford becomes the first Laker to earn an individual league championship since Job Kemboi did so in the 5,000 meters in 2015. She is the first female Laker to claim an individual title since Brianna Heilsnis and Jessica Matthews did so in the hammer and triple jump, respectively, in 2014.
Â
For Elmore it is the ninth record she has broken this season and she also earned a spot on the 2018 Track & Field All Sportsmanship Team. That after earning a runner up finish in the 100-meters at 12.36 earlier in the day. That gave her a second All-Conference honor, this time Second Team.
Â
Junior
Jhade Hayes (Land O'Lakes, Fla.) rounded things out with a 13-of-19 finish in the shot put with a personal best of 9.97-meters.
Â
The Lakers are now off until May 5 when they head a little more than an hour north to Athens, Georgia and the University of Georgia for the Torrin Lawrence Memorial.
