Charman Earns PBC Women's Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week; Only Fourth Clayton State Keeper to Earn Award

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Following a stunning week that included a home shutout victory over a Division I team, redshirt-senior Jessica Charman (Harefield, England) has been named the Peach Belt Conference Women's Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week as announced by the league on Wednesday, September 13.

Charman posted the most impressive week of her career while dealing with a shifting schedule due to Hurricane Irma. Over the course of two games she finished with a pair of wins, 0.50 goals against average, 18 saves and a .947 save percentage.

That week opened at Truett-McConnell (9/8) where she played all 90 minutes, made five saves and picked up a 4-1 victory. That would set the table for one of the most impressive performances in recent program history as Charman and the Lakers took on Division I The Citadel (9/10) at Laker Field.

In that game she made a career-high 13 saves, including on some point blank shots late in the game, while playing all 90 minutes to earn a 1-0 shutout. That came against a Bulldogs team that was off to the best start in program history.

She also had a hand in setting things up for what would be the game-winning goal as the series started on an outlet pass following her save on the fifth of a series of shots by The Citadel.

Charman is just the fourth keeper to earn a weekly PBC honor since the league began issuing them in 2000. She joins current graduate assistant coach Charlotte McCormack, who earned a program record five selections – including the last five - and Laoise O'Driscoll, who claimed back-to-back honors in 2011. The first keeper to earn a weekly honor was Judith Chime in 2005 as she was named Player of the Week.

Overall the program has claimed a total of 41 weekly honorees from Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week and Goalkeeper of the Week. In 2007, the Peach Belt went from recognizing just one individual to honoring two per week and three weekly starting in 2008.

Charman and Clayton State hit the road this weekend when they open Peach Belt Conference play on Saturday, September 16 at Lander. Game time is set for 5 p.m. in Greenwood, South Carolina.
