ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Clayton State senior
Keith Egan (Newbridge, Ireland) has been named to the All-Peach Belt Conference First-Team for the first time in his career and becomes just the third multi-time winner in the history of the program, as was announced at the league's banquet on Thursday, April 13.
Â
Egan was named to the team following a regular season that has seen him post a 73.26 stroke average, good for eighth in the league, four Top-10 finishes and a tournament victory. On March 7 he shot a one-under par 215 to win the Southern Tide Classic ahead of a field of 74 other golfers. It was the program's first individual champion since the 2013-14 season.
Â
He also shot eight-under at the Third Annual UNG Fall Invitational on October 4 and tied for fifth in a field of 68 at that tournament. Egan shot even par to finish tied for 10-of-96 among some of the best golfers in the country at the South/Southeast Region Preview on March 28 and was three-under and tied for 8-of-89 at the Jay Jennison Cup to start the season on September 20. That tournament that was played at the site of this year's league championships.
Â
In finishing tied for 12-of-81 at the Third Annual Newberry Invitational at The Ocean Course on February 21, Egan helped lead the Lakers to a runner-up finish. He was also named Peach Belt Conference Golfer of the Week on March 9, marking the second time in his career that he had accomplished that feat.
Â
With his selection, Egan earns the ninth such honor all-time and becomes only the third Laker to be named to All-Conference not just twice, but in consecutive years. Last season he was named to the Second-Team and this year joins Dave Kelly (1999, 2000) and Will Wilcox (2008, 2009) as the only other multi-time selections.
Â
It is select company as Kelly was the first golfer to have major success in the program's NCAA era (Since 1997) and Wilcox has grossed more than $2 million during his career on the PGA Tour.
Â
In terms of All-Conference selections, Egan is one of just six to earn that recognition, including Fredric Lindblom (2014, First-Team), Wade Binfield (2010, Second-Team), Wilcox, Kelly and Michael Farley (1998). Lindblom (2014) and Wilcox (2009) were also named Player of the Year. Prior to 2010, the Peach Belt selected just one team of eight individuals.
Â
Egan and Clayton State men's golf return to action tomorrow, Friday, April 14 as they face 10 other schools at the 2017 Peach Belt Conference Championship in St. Augustine, Florida.
