Clayton State's Davis Named NABC All-Southeast Region Second-Team; Seventh Laker Selected All-Time

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Redshirt-senior forward Alfonso Davis (Bronx, N.Y.) has been named a National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-Southeast Region Second-Team selection following one of the most impressive seasons in the recent history of Clayton State men's basketball as announced on Monday, March 20.

Davis adds to an impressive list of awards from 2016-17 as he has already been named the first ever back-to-back Peach Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year and an All-PBC First-Team selection.

The latter is the first such selection by a Laker men's basketball player since the 2010-11 season and Davis' second overall All-Conference honor. He is only the third multi time winner in that category and there has also been only one other Clayton State player to earn Defensive Player of the Year, that being Juron Dobbs in the 2012-13 season.

When it comes to the Lakers NABC All-Southeast Region history, Davis is just the seventh individual to be so honored and the first since Teondre Williams (Second-Team) in 2011-12.

This year the Bronx, New York native produced a record setting year in leading the Lakers to a PBC West Division Championship, their first regular season title since 2002, and a return to the PBC Tournament for the first time since 2012-13.

On the year he averaged 14.1 points, 8.6 rebounds, 1.7 blocks, 1.8 assists and 1.5 steals while shooting .527 from the field. He also finished his career in the Top-10 in 17 categories, 10 in single season and seven in career, to go along with a program single game record.

Chief among those are 160 defensive boards this season, breaking the record set by Clayton State Athletics Hall of Famer Keith Herring in the 1993-94 season. He would take out another record set by Herring when he pulled down a record 21 rebounds against North Georgia on February 6, finally breaking the mark of 19 that he tied the year before.

Additionally, his 249 boards this season is fifth most in a season as is his 8.6 rebounds per game and his 50 blocks are tied for sixth. He pulled down 89 offensive boards to tie for seventh and averaged 1.7 blocks, which is ninth.

In the career record book he ranks in the Top-10 in rebounds per game (8.3, T2nd), blocks per game (1.8, 4th), total blocks (97, 5th), field goal percentage (.546, 6th), points per game (15.8, T7th), total rebounds (454, 8th) and total field goals (335, T8th).

He also scored in double-figures 21 times and reached double-digit boards 11 times. Of the latter, eight were double-doubles, including 22 points, 11 rebounds and three steals against eventual PBC East Division Champion Augusta (1/9). He also had 24 points and 10 caroms at Armstrong (1/14).

Davis joins six other individuals in the history of the program as an NABC All-Southeast Region selection. That list begins with Clayton State Hall of Famer Robert Conley in 1998-99 (Second-Team), Craig Butts in 2004-05 (Second-Team), Todd McLaurin in 2006-07 (Second-Team), Brandon Robinson (First-Team) and Timmy Downs (Second-Team) in 2010-11 and Teondre Williams in 2011-12 (Second-Team).

Of the 11 individuals selected from the Southeast Region for this year's teams, Davis is one of four Peach Belt Conference student-athletes. He is joined by Montevallo's Javonte Douglas (First-Team), Augusta's Keshun Sherrill (First-Team) and Young Harris' C.J. Wilson (Second-Team).
