All-Conference Teams I History of All-Conference Selections
AUGUSTA, Ga. – Clayton State women's basketball has earned a pair of selections on the 2016-17 All-Peach Belt Conference Teams as announced by the league on Friday, March 3 and have made program history for a second straight season.
Â
Redshirt-senior forward
Andrea Benford (Madison, Ga.) has been named to the Second-Team while redshirt-senior guard
Tierra Johnson (Edison, N.J.) earned a spot on the Third-Team. Those two selections tie for the second most of any team behind Lander's three and equals No. 4 Columbus State's two.
Â
For Benford, it is the third time she has been named to a PBC All-Conference Team making her just the second individual to accomplish the feat in program history. Previously she was selected to the Third-Team in 2013-14 and 2015-16. She joins Tanisha Woodard (2008-12) who was named All-PBC three straight years from 2010-12, including a pair of First-Team selections.
Â
This year she earned her highest league honor by averaging 13.5 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.8 blocks, 1.5 steals and 1.0 assists in 26 games, 24 of which have been starts. She is also shooting .497 from the field, was named PBC Player of the Week on November 28 and is 56 points way from reaching 1,000 career points.
Â
She also delivered some incredible single game performances, erupting for a career-high 25 points with 13 boards, five blocks and personal best five steals against Paine (11/23). That was one of 19 games in which she reached double-figures in scoring and seven double-digit rebounding efforts.
Â
Additionally, Benford also had 24 points on 12-of-18 shooting at Georgia Southwestern (1/25) and flirted with a triple-double against Georgia College, finishing with 18 points, nine boards and career-high six blocks.
Â
Johnson earns her first All-PBC honor in what has been both a tremendous season of individual accomplishment and personal challenge. The diminutive sparkplug's season may have come to an end prematurely on January 25 at Georgia Southwestern, but not before she became a player that every opponent had to plan for.
Â
In 19 games, all but one of which were starts, she averaged a team-leading 16.8 points, 2.7 steals and 2.5 assists to go along with 3.7 rebounds, 31.7 minutes per game and a .504 mark from the field.
Â
She scored in double-figures in all but three games and had the best game of her career at No. 11/12 Union (11/26). That day she played 44 minutes and dropped a career-high 31 points, five shy of a program record, along with five steals as the Lakers pulled off a 98-90 overtime victory.
Â
The first of eight straight double-digit scoring efforts to start the season, she would follow that run by recording her first career double-double with 20 points and career-high 11 caroms at Armstrong State (1/14).
Â
That game followed 21 points, six steals and five assists at Francis Marion (1/7) and 26 points on 12-of-19 shooting against Augusta (1/9). A constant threat throughout the year, Johnson also had only five games in which she didn't log at least 30 minutes, and two of those saw her play 29 minutes.
Â
Both seniors have been a huge part of a season that has seen Clayton State compile a 24-5 overall record and appear in the national rankings a total of nine times. The 24 wins are tied for the seventh most in program history and is the 12
th time that the Lakers have reached the 20-win plateau. They have also knocked off a pair of nationally ranked opponents on the road.
Â
This year's selections mark the 13
th consecutive year that Clayton State has had at least one player named to the All-Peach Belt Conference Team and the 15
th year out of the last 16. In their 22 years as a member of the league they have had a player so honored in 16 of those years.
