AUGUSTA, Ga. – A third place finish in a field that featured three nationally ranked Division II programs has earned junior
Andres Caballero (Mexico City, Mexico) the first Peach Belt Conference Men's Golfer of the Week honor as announced by the league on Thursday, February 23.
Â
In his first tournament of 2017, he delivered a tremendous performance in helping the Lakers finish second at the highly competitive Newberry College Invitational. Over the course of 54 holes, he shot a 67-73-74-214 to take home third place out of a field of 81. That finish is the highest of any Peach Belt Conference men's golfer this week.
Â
That performance helped Clayton State come in ahead of both No. 6 Missouri-St. Louis and No. 13 USC Aiken with a three-round score of 888. Additionally, the tournament was played on one of the toughest courses in the country, the Ocean Course of the Kiawah Island Golf Resort.
Â
He becomes just the seventh individual to earn the award in program history, joining Will Wilcox (4), Fredrik Lindblom (2), Alex Vetnar (1),
Keith Egan (1),
Henry Gee (1) and Haskell (1). The PBC has given the award since the 2007-08 season and these seven individuals have combined to take home 11 such honors.
Â
Caballero is the first Laker to be so recognized this year and the first since teammate
Keith Egan did so on March 3, 2016.
Â
Clayton State returns to action on February 27-28 when they travel to Pooler, Georgia for the 2017 Pirate Invitational. Hosted by Armstrong State, the tournament will be played at the Savannah Quarters Country Club.
