NEW ORLEANS, La. – In what has quickly become a regular occurrence, both Clayton State cross country programs have been recognized as All-Academic Teams and earned an All-Academic Individual honoree as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) during the week of February 9.
Â
It is the sixth straight year that the women's program has been so honored and the sixth time overall for the men's team. On top of those awards, sophomore
Carla Catala (Barcelona, Spain) was named as an All-Academic Individual.
Â
Overall, she is among 404 Division II women's cross country runners to achieve at least a 3.25 GPA and finish in the top 30-percent of the eligible field at their NCAA Regional to be named to the team this year.
Â
"Carla continues our women's streak of individual academic recognition by USTFCCCA," said Mead. "That individual recognition requires a high finish at the region meet."
As a team, the Lakers women's program posted a cumulative GPA of 3.51 and are among 156 programs that met the minimum 3.0 GPA requirement to earn the honor this season. The men are one of just 115 programs nationwide to earn a spot on this prestigious list with a 3.04 GPA.
Â
"This is a nice honor to have both the men's and women's cross country teams be recognized for their academic excellence," said head cross country coach
Mike Mead. "This is the sixth year in a row the women's team has received this award from USTFCCCA and it marks the sixth time for the men's program to earn it. I am extremely proud of our teams' efforts in the classroom!"
