BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Sophomore
Nia Elmore (Hinesville, Ga.) delivered a pair of record setting performances as Clayton State women's track & field opened the 2017-18 season at the BSC Panther Indoor Icebreaker on Friday, December 1.
Elmore opened in the 60-meters, where she posted a time of 7.96 to surpass the previous mark of 8.04 set more than a decade ago by Jon Taylor during the 2006 campaign. That performance would earn her a 21-of-48 finish in the event.
She would continue the assault on Taylor's records later in the day, this time in the 200-meters. Facing a field that included competitors from Division I schools like Georgia Tech, Troy and Tulane, Elmore ran a 25.96 to better Taylor's 2006 mark by two one-hundredths (25.98) and have the sixth highest finish by a non-DI student-athlete. Overall she finished 19-of-52.
Joining Elmore would be freshman
Abigail Campbell (McDonough, Ga.), who had a strong debut as she finished 7-of-28 in the shot put (12.19m). That was just 0.06 shy of the program record set by Brianna Heilsnis in 2014. Sophomore
Lynnet Kosgei (Eldoret, Kenya) placed 14-of-21 in the mile (5:47.67) and sophomore
Bianca Kamara (Lilburn, Ga.) finished 20-of-29 in the long jump (4.64m) to round out the top performers.
The Lakers are not back in action until the New Year when they return to Birmingham for the Emory CrossPlex Invitational on January 21.
NOTE
Elmore's previous career bests were 8.21 in the 60-meters (Emory CrossPlex Invitational, 1/22/17) and 26.94 in the 200-meters (South Alabama Jaguar Invitational, 2/5/17).
