Clayton State’s Catala Martin Earns All-Conference With Eighth Place Finish at PBC Championships

FORT BENNING, Ga. – Junior Carla Catala Martin (Barcelona, Spain) became the 23rd individual to earn All-Conference honors as Clayton State women's cross country finished 7-of-11 at the 2017 Peach Belt Conference Championships on Saturday, October 21. As a team they finished with 181 points.
 
With her personal best time of 18:22.90, Catala Martin earned an 8-of-85 finish to lead the Lakers for a fifth straight race and pick up All-Peach Belt Conference honors. She is the 38th overall selection all-time and the first since Maia Kuhnen in 2015.
 
Junior Lynnet Kosgei (Eldoret, Kenya) was the next highest finisher for the Lakers in 39th (19:35.40) while senior Joy Diaz (Riverdale, Ga.) finished 47th with a mark of 19:51.80. Junior Ariel Boyd-Ghani (Morrow, Ga.) delivered a personal best time of 20:23.30 to finish in 55th to round out the top performers.
 
North Georgia earned the Peach Belt Conference Championship with 42 points and was followed by Augusta with 52. Rounding out the top five were Georgia College (94), Flagler (98) and UNC Pembroke (134).
 
The Lakers return to the course on Saturday, November 4 when they head to Wingate, North Carolina for the 2017 NCAA Division II Southeast Region Championships. That race will be hosted by Wingate and is slated for a 9 a.m. start.
 
NOTE
All-Conference honors are bestowed upon the top 15 finishers … Catala Martin bested her previous 5k time of 18:42.46 set at the Cougar Cross Country Invitational on September 23, 2017 … Clayton State has had at least one All-PBC performer in 19 of the last 23 seasons.
