MORROW, Ga. – For the 11
th time in 12 seasons, No. 24 Clayton State women's basketball has been selected for the NCAA Division II Tournament and will face Anderson as the No. 4 seed on Friday, March 11. The Southeast Regional will be hosted by No. 3 Limestone in Gaffney, S.C. from March 11-14.
Â
The Lakers earned the berth as an At-Large selection following a season that saw them go 22-6 and appear in the
USA Today Sports Coaches Poll three times and the D2SIDA Media Poll five times, with a high of No. 19 and No. 12, respectively. They also won 13 games in a row at one point, achieved their 11
th season of at least 20 wins and reached the semifinals of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament before falling to eventual PBC Champion Lander.
Â
An NCAA Tournament staple, Clayton State made "The Big Dance" 10 straight times from 2005-14, a stretch that included three Elite Eight trips and the 2011 National Championship. The latter is still the only Division II women's basketball national title claimed by a team out of the Southeast Region.
Â
This season the Lakers have been led by a program record-tying three All-Peach Belt Conference selections, headlined by Second-Team choice
DaQuenna Moore. In 26 games and starts she averaged 10.1 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.6 steals.
Â
She was joined by senior guard
Kenisha Jones-Barrett (Winter Haven, Fla.) and redshirt-junior forward
Andrea Benford (Madison, Ga.), each of whom landed on the Third-Team. Jones-Barrett averaged 10.5 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.4 steals and Benford notched marks of 9.1 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.1 blocks.
The top half of the region will feature Conference Carolinas champion No. 3 Limestone (30-0) as the No. 1 seed against No. 8 seed Augusta (22-8) and PBC Champion Lander (25-6) as the No. 2 seed against No. 7 seed Francis Marion (21-8).
Â
In the lower half of the bracket, No. 3 seed Columbus State (24-5) faces No. 6 seed Wingate (21-8) and No. 4 seed Clayton State taking on No. 5 seed Anderson (22-6). All games will be played at the Limestone's Timken Center.
Â
The Lakers are a combined 3-4 against the Southeast Region field with a pair of wins over Francis Marion and a split with Lander. They were swept by Columbus State and dropped a decision at Augusta. They did not face Limestone, Anderson or Wingate. In fact, they have never faced Anderson in the history of the program.
Clayton State matches up against the winner of the Limestone/Augusta matchup should they win their quarterfinal game. The Lakers NCAA Tournament Quarterfinal game with Anderson will take place on Friday, March 11 at 7:30 p.m..
