AUGUSTA, Ga. – Having delivered one of the best individual seasons in Clayton State men's basketball's recent history, junior guard/forward
Alfonso Davis (Bronx, N.Y.) has been named the Peach Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year and earned All-PBC Second-Team honors, as announced by that organization on Friday, March 4.
Â
Davis becomes just the second Laker to be named Defensive Player of the Year, joining Juron Dobbs who won it following the 2012-13 season, and is the 19
th overall All-Peach Belt Conference selection in team history.
Â
This year he earned both of those awards with a tremendous first year at Clayton State and in the PBC. Davis played in all 26 games, starting 23, and averaged 17.7 points, 7.9 rebounds, 1.8 blocks, 1.2 assists and 0.9 steals per game while shooting.568 from the field and .776 at the foul line.
Â
Among his top performances were 21 double-figure scoring games, including 14 of 20 points or more, and a program record-tying 19 boards with 28 points, four assists and five blocks against Georgia College. He would also score in double-digits in each of his last 16 games while producing 20-point games in 13 of his last 15 games.
Â
Davis also had 33 points, behind a 15-of-18 performance at the foul line, and hauled in 10 rebounds at Augusta for one of his seven double-doubles on the year. That point total was seven shy of equaling the program record set in 1998-99 while his 15 free throws were four short of the all-time single game mark set in 2006.
Â
Within the league, he ranked second in total blocks, fifth in rebounds per game, eighth in scoring, ninth in field goal percentage and was named the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week on January 18. With the latter, he is just the 12 overall selection and ninth individual to accomplish that feat in 21 years in the league.
Â
In terms of program history, his 1.8 blocks per game and 47 total blocks rank sixth and eighth, respectively, for a single season and his totals of 460 points, 205 rebounds and 167 field goals rank just outside of the Top-10.
Â
A transfer from Paine College under head coach
Jimmy Link, Davis also surpassed the 1,000-point plateau for his career (between both institutions) and has a legitimate shot to accomplish the feat in just two years as a Laker.
Â
Davis' selection marks three straight years that Clayton State has had a player named to the All-Peach Belt Conference Team and the seventh over the past six years.
