2016 All-Conference Teams I History of All-Conference Selections
AUGUSTA, Ga. – Graduate midfielder
Maria Marti Bartis (Girona, Spain) has been named the 2016 Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year and an All-PBC First-Team selection following a tremendous campaign.
Â
On the year she produced 11 goals and eight assists for 30 points and finished her career with 37 goals, 18 assists and 92 points. Marti Bartis was also named PBC Player of the Week (Oct. 3) and a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection for the second consecutive year.
Â
She becomes the sixth Player of the Year honoree in program history and is one of just five individuals to earn the honor. It is also only the fourth time that a Laker has been named All-Conference for three or more years.
Â
With a goal against Flagler (10/30) she became the first player in the 47-year combined history of Clayton State soccer (men's and women's) to reach double-figures in three consecutive years. She scored 15 in 2014 and 11 in 2015 and her 37 career goals are the third most in either program's history.
Â
This year Marti Bartis ranks among the league leaders in the highly competitive PBC. She is tied for second in assists and tied for third goals and points.
Â
The only previous PBC Player of the Year winners have been Clayton State Athletic Hall of Famer Nkiru Okosieme (2004), Olaitan Yusuf (2005, 2007), Cherie Sayon (Co- in 2010) and Alicia Robinson (2013).
Â
The only other Lakers to earn three All-Conference honors are Judith Chime (2002-05), Natalia Valentine (2012, 2011, 2010), Yusuf (2007, 2005, 2004) and Okosieme (2004, 2002, 2001). Marti Bartis is only the third to do so in three consecutive seasons, joining Chime and Valentine. She has been chosen as First-Team selection in each of the last two seasons and was a Second-Team choice in 2014.
Â
She becomes the 43
rd overall All-PBC selection and 27
th First-Team selection. The latter includes the first 17 honorees from 2001-07 when the PBC recognized just one team. Marti Bartis' selection also extends a stretch of 16 straight years that Clayton State has had at least one player selected to the All-Peach Belt Conference Team.
Â
"Maria is one of those players that the opposition always looks for first on the team sheet," said head coach
Fergal Forde. "Her commitment and dedication to this program will never be forgotten. Not just in terms of her skill and ability, but also her incredible personality on and off the field. Having watched her for three seasons it is easy to say that she will be truly missed. This award is a fitting tribute to a great player, a great person and a wonderful college career.
