MORROW, Ga. – An offensive outburst, led primarily by their seniors, gave Clayton State (9-6-1, 6-5-1 PBC) a commanding 4-0 victory over Flagler (6-5-3, 5-4-2 PBC) on Senior Day in an NCAA Division II women's soccer game on Sunday, October 30.
Â
Senior forward
Denisha Paskell (McDonough, Ga.) would make the most of her final game at Laker Field as she accounted for both of the Lakers first two goals. She connected at 32:26 for a 1-0 lead before finding the back of the net at the 46:27 mark. On both plays she got loose in front of the goal mouth and converted on both attempts.
Â
That two goal margin would quickly grow as graduate midfielder
Maria Marti Bartis (Girona, Spain) made history less than two minutes later. She cut into the box and stepped past a defender on the right side before burying her 10
th goal of the year into the back left corner.
That score marked the third straight season she reached double digits in goals, becoming the first player to do so, not only in the history of the women's program, but all of Clayton State soccer. That encompasses 25 seasons of men's soccer and 22 seasons of women's soccer.
Â
She also wouldn't be the last goal scorer on the day as freshman defender
Manoly Baquerizo (Guayaquil, Ecuador) planted a free kick at 57:15. Positioned at the right corner of the box, Baquerizo rifled a ball over the wall that went off the hands of the keeper and then tipped into the goal for the fourth score of the day.
Â
Paskell led the way for Clayton State with her two goals while Marti Bartis and Baquerizo each added a solo score. In net, redshirt-junior goalkeeper
Jessica Charman (Harefield, England) was on top of things as she made six saves in 90 minutes to record her fourth shutout of the season. On the year she is now 9-5-1.
Â
Flagler managed 13 shots on the day with six on goal. Leading the way in that area was Addie Foster with four shots, two of which were on net. Fio Fustagno, Morgan Vidrine and Makensie Danaher each added two shots. Racheal Cecil played all 90 minutes for the Saints, surrendering all four goals and making seven saves. She falls to 6-5-3 on the season.
Â
The Lakers have qualified for the 2016 Peach Belt Conference Tournament as the No. 7 Seed but must wait to see who they will face in the quarterfinal round. Those seedings will be officially announced later this afternoon with possible trips to North Georgia, Armstrong State, UNC Pembroke and Young Harris.
