Peach Belt Conference ReleaseÂ
AUGUSTA, Ga. – Junior guard
Alfonso Davis (Bronx, N.Y.) has been named the Peach Belt Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week following a record-setting performance as announced by the league on Monday, January 18.
Â
In his first year with the Lakers, he delivered one of the most impressive two game stretches in program history this past week. Over the course of those games he averaged an incredible 25.0 points, 17.0 rebounds, 4.0 blocks, 4.0 assists and 1.0 steals, all while shooting .571 (20-of-35) from the field and .833 (10-of-12) from the foul line.
Â
Against Georgia College (1/13) he produced 28 points, 19 rebounds, four blocks, four assists and a pair of steals in 34 minutes. With that performance he accomplished something only three individuals had in the program's 26-year history as he tied the program's single game rebound record - a mark not equaled since 1997.
Â
Davis would not have a letdown in his next game at Flagler (1/16). In that game he scored 22 points on 10-of-18 shooting, grabbed another 15 rebounds, blocked five shots and dished out four assists. That performance in 37 minutes of action helped the Lakers come from behind in the second half to claim an 87-73 victory.
Â
Following a Monday, matinee against UNC Pembroke, he is now averaging 14.9 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.1 blocks and 1.3 assists while shooting .561 from the field and .723 from the foul line.
Â
"Alfonso has been consistent in January," said head coach
Jimmy Link. He has really done a great job of scoring and rebounding but I think what he has turned up the most is his defense with his shot blocking ability."
Â
Not only is Davis' selection the first this season by a Laker, but it is the first for the program since the 2011-12 season when Teondre Williams won the award on November 28. Overall, Clayton State has had 12 selections since Corey Johnson earned the award during the 1996-97 season, which was just the second year as a provisional member of the PBC.
Â
Those selections have also been spread out among just nine players in that 20-year span. Robert Conley holds the all-time mark with three selections over the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons and his two selections in the latter mark just one of two times the Lakers have had multiple honorees. They have had at least one player chosen for the award in 10 of those seasons.
Â
Davis and the Lakers are back in action on Saturday, January 23 when they host North Georgia. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. at The Loch following the conclusion of the women's contest.
